On set of ‘Light On’ video music

L.A. Valley College’s football stadium was the home field for “American Idol” winner David Cook’s video, “Light On.” We spent the night on the 50-yard line as David shot his first video from his upcoming self-titled album, due out November 18. Although he looked like he’d been doing it for years, David told us he felt really timid on his first take: “Obviously I don’t have any experience — it’s not like I grew up shooting music videos.”

During a break in the action, we sat down with David so he could tell us more about the song, which was a collaboration with one of his biggest influences, Chris Cornell. After David did a rendition of Cornell’s “Billie Jean” cover, he got some positive feedback from the former Audioslave and Soundgarden frontman. A relationship soon developed, and when it came time to work on the album, Cornell offered the song to David. Three months later it became one of the 12 songs on the album, 10 of which David either wrote or co-wrote.

The song, according to David, was intended to appeal to a wide audience, so the video’s concept follows those lines. The mostly performance video has David in the middle of the football field, singing the song by himself and with his band. Cut in between shots of the performance will be vignettes of a guy pursuing the girl. When I asked if David Archuleta would be making a cameo — just as last season’s runner-up, Blake Lewis, did in a Jordan Sparks video — David said, “Why didn’t I think of that?” He added that David would make a great male lead in the video: “He’d have to win the girl, and he’d be horribly uncomfortable with that.”

Look for Cook’s video to be released in early November, just in time for the album’s release.
