David Cook: Inside His New CD
Posted by: Ryvos | Comment | Categories: Album News, Magazines.

He rocked his way to the season 7 ”American Idol” win. But with his new self-titled album, he’s facing some much tougher judges: the CD-buying public

Honoring a time-worn rock & roll tradition, David Cook is trying to coax his drummer out of a prone position. ‘‘Hey, I didn’t make you go out and drink last night!” he ribs the reclining stickman. ”You’re at work, bitch! Don’t lie on the couch and look at me like I just killed your dog.” Soon they are all back at it inside Hollywood’s famed SIR rehearsal studios, where hard-rock bands have long given their chops a workout before hitting the road. This afternoon, the hardest and loudest sounds are coming out of Studio 6, where Cook & Co. are running through songs from the American Idol winner’s forthcoming major-label debut. ”Bar Ba Sol,” the heaviest song from the new album, builds from thick, bottom-end-rattling riffs to screaming solos, and Cook is letting loose the kind of grungy wailing that might make less gifted singers bust a corpuscle. The metalheads down the hall must surely be impressed.

The song ends, and the mood is broken as Stevie Salas, the musical director who helped Cook put this new band together, bursts through the studio door, phone to his ear. ”David, this is my ex-girlfriend,” he announces, ”and she told me to give you a pinch on your cute little ass from one of your cougar fans.” Cook winces. ”I am passing it on verbally without giving you the pinch,” Salas reassures him.

The Time of His Life

With a national tour behind him and a debut album out this month, David Cook is just warming up.

Shortly after plunking down his bags in his new Tulsa home two years ago, David Cook recalls hearing a quote, which seems eerily prescient now.

“‘Luck is when preparedness meets opportunity’ is a quote I was told when I first moved to Tulsa – it really was just that,” the 25-year-old American Idol winner recalls of the famous phrase uttered by motivational speaker, Earl Nightingale.

As the phrase foretold, the recent graphic design graduate, wannabe rock star and bartender would soon find himself packing his bags again on his way to the national spotlight and Idol stardom.

“I’ve worked at doing this since I was 15 years old, and everything else in my life at the time seemed pointless or mundane. It’s funny to look back and see how the past interacts with what I am doing now – like the graphic design stuff. I spent a lot of time designing CDs, posters and ancillary material… just thinking, hey, it’s fun. And that artistic ideal really parlays itself into what I’m doing now. I believe in fate to a degree. I believe fate puts you in a position that allows you the opportunity to do what you want to do. I believe it’s just a matter of whether or not you have the wherewithal to take hold of it, and go with it.”

The role fate played in Cook’s rise to fame is now the stuff of legend. He originally set out for the American Idol auditions in Omaha, Neb. in support of his younger brother Andrew. Although his original plan was to stay in the shadows, Andrew convinced him to audition too. So, Cook picked up a microphone and sang Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” for the show’s judges, and the rest, as they say, is Idol history.

“It was a very out-of-body experience. I can’t remember what it felt like to stand on that stage,” Cook says of the moment that catapulted him from a final contender to champ last May, just a few months after that fateful audition.

Who is your Entertainer of the Year?
Posted by: Ryvos | Comment | Categories: American Idol, Articles, Latest News, Magazines.

The hallways of EW HQ are abuzz — yes, abuzz! — as we hunker down and enter the serious planning stages of our annual Entertainer of the Year issue. (Last year’s winner, J.K. Rowling has added the title of Tea Party Hostess to her resume since wrapping up the little matter of her Harry Potter franchise.) And naturally, we want to get your input about which singers, actors, writers, directors, circus performers, and other assorted pop-culture standouts rocked your world in 2008.

For me, the first half of the entertainment year was defined by the David Cook-David Archuleta showdown on American Idol. Even thought my heart belonged to Carly Smithson and Jason Castro, it was the two Davids who gave us an epic, fan-mobilizing, household-dividing battle on par with Federer vs. Nadal, Coke vs. Pepsi, even chocolate vs. vanilla. And despite a million and one roadblocks from the show’s producers, the scruffy Midwestern rocker and the puppy-eyed teenage belter managed to make Idol’s seventh season a wildly addictive, and ultimately satisfying, viewing experience.

Surely, though, you guys have other ideas about who belongs on EW’s list of pop-culture MVPs for 2008 in addition to or (gasp) instead of Mr. Cook and Mr. Archuleta. We’re planning to mine the message boards for this PopWatch item to create an Entertainers of the Year gallery and bracket game, the results of which will appear in the pages of EW’s Entertainer of the Year issue in November. So don’t delay: Give us your nomination(s) for Entertainer of the Year below. We’re abuzz — yes, abuzz! — as we await your picks!
