Music Review

If you’re expecting Daughtry 2: Post-Grunge Boogaloo, well…you’re about right. Cook is clearly built in the guy-linered mold of that earlier Idol alum, though his debut owes just as much to the expert hands that craft it, including producers Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance) and Brian Howes (Hinder, Chris Cornell). They give David Cook’s clutch of bombastic verse-chorus- verse rockers an impressive melodic sheen, one well suited to Cook’s husky, expressive vocals. If anything, the series of booming midtempo anthems (most notable among them “Bar-ba-sol” and “Mr. Sensitive”) could use a little sandpapering around the edges.

David Cook Dedicates Song to Brother
Posted by: Ryvos | 3 Comments | Categories: Album News, Interviews, New Music.

David Cook isn’t lacking for inspiration these days. But while his skyrocketing career is certainly fairy tale fodder, Cook needs to look no further than his own backyard. To that end, the ‘American Idol’ winner wrote a song called ‘Permanent’ — the “poignantly personal” second-to-last track on Cook’s forthcoming debut solo record — for his brother, Adam, who is currently fighting cancer.

“I want this to be a piano lullaby to my older brother, who’s been battling a brain tumor for a long time,” Cook tells PopEater. “I knew that the record was lacking this kind of bare, honest, naked song. I didn’t allow myself to be metaphorical or anything other than, ‘This is the exact thought that I’m thinking, and I’m going to put it on paper and leave it alone.”

While recording the song, which features a 15-piece string orchestra, Cook found himself in emotional throes. “I was crying, of course, because I do that all the time,” he laughs.

As for his brother, Cook says he’s doing well and it’s fingers crossed for the future. “We’ve been very fortunate as a family to get quite a bit of good news pertaining to his illness while I was on tour,” Cook says. “Hopefully it’s all good news ahead.”

“Idol” champ David Cook set to release debut album
Posted by: Ryvos | Comment | Categories: Album News, Articles, New Music.

In just a few short months, David Cook went from no-name aspiring singer/songwriter to household-name “American Idol” winner.

His post-”Idol” single “The Time of My Life” debuted at No. 3 on the Hot 100, the highest entry of 2008, and has sold 970,000 digital downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Now Cook and the team at 19 Recordings/RCA are trying to keep the momentum going with his self-titled debut, due November 18. On “Idol,” he received rave reviews and millions of votes for his hard rock makeovers of pop songs like Lionel Richie’s “Hello” and Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby.” Some controversy arose as to where the arrangements came from, particularly concerning his rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” which was based on a version done by Chris Cornell, but it didn’t deter fans from crowning him the winner.

With the covers game out of the way, Cook says he wants this new record to be a reintroduction of sorts to his fans. “I came from a background of playing original music,” he says, “and I really wanted to get back to that.”

Kevin Griffin talks about ‘Avalanche’
Posted by: Ryvos | Comment | Categories: Album News, Latest News, New Music.

Evening everyone,
It’s a nice Friday night, about to go to bed, but I thought I’d share a few items with you all before I hit the sack.
Better Than Ezra is about to complete a deal with a label to put out our next CD in Spring 09. We already have a handful of songs recorded and will do more in December and January.
Also, I have a song I wrote with David Cook that will be on his debut album out November 18. The song is called “Avalanche”. You may recall an old song titled “Avalanche” that I would play at shows, but this is a new song. I always loved the title and finally got the song right working with David.
Lots of other cool songs coming out with different artists in the new year.
Stay tuned!!!!

David Cook Gearing up for Debut Album Release

Get ready, Cookie fans! American Idol winner David Cook is putting the finishing touches on his debut album.

According to EW, Cook’s album, which releases Nov. 18, has been mastered, and the singer is personally overseeing the final steps in the process. Cook wrote or co-wrote 11 of the disc’s 12 tracks, working with the Goo Goo Dolls’ Johnny Reznik, Our Lady Peace’s Raine Maida (who gets credit on four tracks) and Chris Cornell, who penned the first single off the album, “Light On.”

In addition to wrapping up his time in the studio, Cook is also shooting the video for Light On in L.A. with Wayne Isham and gearing up for a slew of TV appearances to promote the album. Cook will perform on the Nov. 1 episode of Saturday Night Live (the last full episode before the election) and will stop by Good Morning America and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno among others.

Beginning Oct. 21, fans who pre-order the album on iTunes will be able to instantly download “Light On” and will also get an exclusive bonus track once the album is released. Are you ready to rock with Cook?

Decoding ‘American Idol’ Winner David Cook’s Song Titles
Posted by: Ryvos | 1 Comments | Categories: Album News, American Idol, Articles, New Music, New Releases.

We’re not going to pretend we know what goes on in “American Idol” season-seven winner David Cook’s swirly little head. But a peep at some of the song titles on his upcoming self-titled debut, due November 18, definitely made us say, “Huh?” (But first, a caveat: We have not heard the album at all.)

The first one that grabbed our attention was “Bar-ba-sol,” which is either an homage to the original premium shave cream — in which case we applaud his blatant Chris Brown-like product placement at a time when musicians have to get their hustle on any way they can — or an homage to season-six pinup Antonella Barba, which we would also applaud. The track “Heroes” also has some obvious product-placement possibilities, but Cook might have to battle Wendy and Lisa if he wants to muscle his way onto the hit NBC show’s soundtrack.

Another title is “Mr. Sensitive,” which, given the sourpuss, dead-eyed stare Cooky is giving on the album’s Photoshop-tastic cover, makes total sense. We’re not saying it’s a potential jinx, but considering the struggles of male “Idol” winners and runners-up over the past few years, maybe having a song called “Permanent” on your debut is putting the chart before the horse.

We are intrigued, however, by the overcapitalization of the last song, “A Daily AntheM,” which we’ll assume is a shout-out to Cook’s older brother, Adam, whose struggle with cancer was an ongoing theme in last season’s drama. If that’s the case, Cook again proves that he’s a totally decent, stand-up guy with a huge heart. Otherwise, the songs appear to be the expected mix of rockers and ballads, including “Declaration,” “Light On” (co-written by Chris Cornell), “Come Back to Me,” “Life on the Moon,” “Lie,” “I Did It for You,” “Avalanche” and the sap-tastic coronation bonus track “The Time of My Life.”
