The king of Blue Springs got a coveted stamp on his celebrity passport on Saturday: David Cook was the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live.”
And it wasn’t just any episode. It was the last one before the presidential election and the end of a campaign that has brought “SNL” a ton of viewers and newfound respect. Plus, John McCain was a special guest, adding even more hype to the show.
Cook sang two songs from his debut album “David Cook,” which comes out Nov. 18: the first single, “Light On,” and then the album’s first track, “Declaration.” Both are ideal singles for several radio formats: Top 40, adult alternative, mainstream rock and adult Top 40. (Remember: His fandom includes a very large cult of women 30 and older.)
The live “SNL” versions were good, but frankly I don’t think either surpassed his best “Idol” moments. His voice sounded strong in some spots, a little fatigued in others, especially during “Declaration.” He could probably use a good vacation.
The band behind him looked and sounded like a lot of other stout and polished big-label bands, including the crew that supports Daughtry. I didn’t hear a full-blown arena act, but he/they could easily handle something more intimate: a large theater or big auditorium, like Memorial Hall.
If debates and campaigns are supposed to prove to America whether a candidate is presidential, an “SNL” performance should prove whether a band or performer is a legitimate big-time entertainer.
Saturday night, Cook passed that muster with room to spare. Now comes the hard part.

According to the website Mollygood.com, Barack Obama may be appearing on Saturday Night Live on November 1–the week David Cook is scheduled to perform!
“I heard from one of Sarah’s aides this morning that at the obligatory SNL after party, a slightly affected Seth Meyers blurted out something to the effect of “…yeah, but just wait til you see what we have cooked up for Obama’s appearance right before the election.” You may remember that Obama “canceled” his appearance on the show on opening night because of Hurricane Ike. But sources now say that it could have been a ploy cooked up by Lorne Michaels and David Axelrod to save Obama for the November 1st show… right before the election.”
Lorne Michaels, the executive producer of “Saturday Night Live,” predicts that the presidential and vice presidential candidates will stop by the comedy show before the election. He also said in a phone interview Tuesday that Tina Fey will return to play Gov. Sarah Palin.
“I think sooner or later, everyone will come through,” Michaels said of the candidates. He declined to give dates as to when “Saturday Night Live” viewers might see Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama, as well as their running mates, Sen. Joseph Biden and Gov. Palin (…) “In 2000, both Bush and Gore came on,” Michaels noted. As for when this crop of candidates would appear, he said, “I don’t know when. We’re always talking to everyone.”
As for Fey coming back to reprise her role as Gov. Palin before the election, Michaels said, “I think that’s likely.”
Even though Fey’s depiction of Palin has helped drive the show to a 50 percent increase in ratings over last year, Michaels confirmed what Fey said in a recent interview with TV Guide – that she’s done playing Palin after the election. “She’s gone” after the election, said Michaels. “She has a full-time job” as the creator and star of the NBC comedy “30 Rock,” which returns Oct. 30. Michaels added that “SNL” cast member Kristin Wiig would likely play the Alaska governor should the need arise past Nov. 4.
Michaels also told the Tribune exclusively that Ben Affleck would be the host of the show’s Nov. 1 broadcast. David Cook of “American Idol” fame will be the musical guest.
“Saturday Night Live’s” final pre-election broadcast will air Monday, Nov. 3. That “Election Bash” will not be live but will be a mix of new material taped for the program and older political skits from the past year. There are a total of six “SNL” broadcasts before the end of the election season: Two additional Thursday broadcasts on Oct. 16 and 23, three Saturday broadcasts Oct. 18 and 25 and Nov. 1, and the “Election Bash” Nov. 3. The hosts and musical guests are as follows: Josh Brolin and Adele on Oct. 16, Jon Hamm and Coldplay on Oct. 25 and Affleck and Cook on Nov. 1.
I will have much more from Michaels soon. I’ll be posting a long piece on the resurgent “Saturday Night Live” in the next few days.
David Cook and Archuleta went to Ford Day yesterday.
Archie perform was his new single “Crush” , and other songs from AI : “Imagine” and “Angels”.
After, Cook was introduced as The New American Idol, lots of cheering!
The first song was “The World I Know”, it was amazing! After, he gave the opportunity to the audience choose the other song. He gave 2 options: “Hello” or “My Hero”. The crowd picked “hello”.
But, he did a weird thing on the ending, he said “i love you” instead of “is it me you’re looking for?”. Its strange, doesnt it?
So he ended with “The Time Of My Life”. Amazing!
Here it is a video singing an acoustic version “Hello”. It’s not the best quality, buuut..
