On Wednesday night, a year after he was crowned the American Idol, David Cook performed on the season-eight finale, when Kris Allen was named this year’s champion. During his performance, Cook paid tribute to his late brother Adam with the song “Permanent.”

“For the finale this year, I was floored that they would allow me to have that platform,” he told MTV News. “There’s so many great artists out there that could have had that moment. The fact that they had me come back and perform ‘Permanent,’ something that was important to me, the charity and everything, to continue to give me that platform [was great].”

He does admit that although he was grateful for the chance to sing the song and bring attention to his charity, Accelerate Brain Trust Cure, he did hope that when he went out there, he wouldn’t get too emotional and cry in front of everyone. “I was kind of half-joking with everyone beforehand that I always seem to cry at ‘Idol,’ ” he said. “I really didn’t want to with this last performance.”

Luckily, the show offered him some eye candy (and some old friends) to keep him from tearing up. “It was difficult, but I just remember looking around the room and seeing, like, Cameron Diaz over here and Heather Locklear over here and the four judges in the front and just thinking it’s such an oddly absurd moment, and I was here a year ago,” he said. “To have those, for lack of a better way to phrase it, distractions, it was just like, ‘Where in the world am I at right now?’ It kind of helped me get through it.”

5. Kellie Pickler - 2.3 million
- Like fellow Idol alum Underwood, Pickler is more cowgirl than diva. She has sold 1 million records since the show. She is paid to endorse Sexy Hair products.

6. Clay Aiken - 2.2 million
- The Raleigh, N.C., native maintains loyal following six years after finishing second on Idol. He has sold 4 million albums and penned a New York Times best-selling memoir. Aiken recently finished a run in Broadway’s “Spamalot.

7. Chris Daughtry - 2.0 million
- One of the first Idol rockers to reach the final four, Daughtry’s debut album sold over 4 million copies. His follow-up is slated to hit stores this July.

8. David Cook - 2.0 million
- Once a small-town songwriter, Cook has a top-selling album and a lucrative endorsement deal with Skechers.

9. David Archuleta - 1.3 million
- Edged out in the seventh season by Cook, baby-faced Archuleta has gone on to release a successful album of soulful pop. The self-titled debut record has sold 700,000 copies. The 18 year-old has played more than 100 live shows since Idol.

10. Taylor Hicks - $300,000
- Prematurely gray-haired soul master Hicks charmed Idol audiences and won the fifth season. He’s now playing Teen Angel in a national tour of Grease.

If your favorite is not named this year’s American idol, the most star-studded finale in the show’s history should take the edge off your disappointment.

Carrie Underwood and David Cook will both perform next Wednesday night, but it doesn’t stop there.

According to the Associated Press, others who have agreed to perform include Lionel Richie, Cyndi Lauper, Queen Latifah, the Black Eyed Peas and Keith Urban.

Adam Cook, 36, a lawyer, died early Sunday morning after an 11-year struggle with the disease, which had spread to his spine. He leaves behind his wife, Kendra, and their children.

David made the announcement Sunday morning at the 12th Annual Race for Hope 5K run/walk in Washington, D.C. benefiting finding a cure for brain cancer. The “Light On” rocker was the event’s honorary chairman and his team raised more the $97,000 for the cause.

The brothers had one of AI’s most memorable, tear-worthy moments ever, when Adam sat in the audience in April 2008 and watched David perform his rendition of Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby.”

Residents of their hometown in Terre Haute, Indiana, raised $45,000 so that Adam could be flown in with the proper medical care.

Cook, 26, whose brother Adam has been battling brain cancer for over a decade, will serve as grand marshal in the Race for Hope 5K, which benefits brain cancer research, and run the race as part of a team he set up – which has already raised more than $40,000.

“He wants nothing from us at all,” says race co-chair Jeff Kolodin, who contacted PEOPLE with the story. “This transcends fame and money and everything else. He just wants to help the cause.”

Cook is happy to skimp on sleep to do so: Last year’s American Idol winner will leave his West Palm Beach, Fla., concert Saturday night, May 2, and fly in to D.C. around 3 a.m. Sunday, only to wake up four hours later. Then, after a day at the race, he’ll hop another flight to his next tour stop.

But the sacrifice is well worth it. “The opportunity to become involved in such a worthwhile cause is paramount for me and my family. I don’t run normally, but it seems a small sacrifice compared to what those who have fought cancer have endured,” Cook tells PEOPLE. “And the fact that my fans have rallied to raise so much in donations is the biggest compliment.”
